Live an exemplary life among the natives so that your actions will refute their prejudices. Then they’ll be won over to God’s side and be there to join in the celebration when he arrives. 1Peter 2:12 (MSG)
A priest moved to a new town and some weeks after he arrived, he had an occasion to ride the bus from his home to the city. When he sat down, he discovered that the conductor had accidentally returned to him 5 rupees extra. As he considered what to do, he thought to himself, “I’d better give the 5 rupees back. It would be wrong to keep it.” Then he thought, “Oh, forget it, it’s only 5 rupees. Who would worry about this little amount? Anyway, the bus transport company earns too much fare; they will never know it. Accept it as a ‘gift from God’ and keep quiet.”
When his destination arrived, he paused momentarily at the door, then he handed the 5 rupee note to the conductor and said, “Here, you gave me too much change.” The conductor with a smile replied, “Aren’t you the new priest in my town? I have been thinking lately about going to church. I just wanted to see what you would do if I gave you too much change. I’ll see you at the church on Sunday.” When the priest stepped out of the bus, he literally grabbed the nearest lamp post, held on, and said, “Oh God, I almost sold you for 5 rupees.” He nearly risked his personal testimony.
