This is the brand-new covenant that I will make with Israel when the time comes. I will put my law within them – write it on their hearts! – and be their God. And they will be my people. Jer 31:33(MSG)
When God gave Israel his ten commandments, he wrote its precepts on stone. These principles served as a basis for the covenant or agreement. There is no question that commandments were holy, just and good but it was only that God could keep his portion of the bargain but the people of Israel failed in less than 40 days – by worshipping the golden calf (Ex 32:4). Why did this happen? All their worship was effort based. From the day Adam sinned, our inherent nature is a rebel against God and we will never succeed to keep his statutes even with the best of our efforts.
But the new covenant is unlike the old.
As in every covenant, there is shedding of blood, Jesus shed his own blood on our behalf to seal this convent. It is no more our efforts but his grace. The new covenant is written on our hearts and therefore can be accessed only through our faith in him. Everything is better about the New Covenant – we have direct access to the supreme high priest and even a better “promised-land”. Under the new covenant, Salvation is a free gift (Eph 2:8,9).
The best part of the New Covenant is that Jesus keeps our part of the bargain with God and through our blessed Holy Spirit, who lives in us, we share in the inheritance of Christ and enjoy a permanent and unbroken relationship with God.
